Self Storage and Packing Tips

Self Storage Packing Tips

Here is a short list of tips and tricks for packing your things before moving. Over the course of many years, and having moved several times ourselves, we have compiled this list of tips and tricks to help your move go more smoothly. Moving is tough and stressful no matter what you do, but at least you can mitigate the angst as much as possible with our helpful suggestions. Some of these you probably already know, but we hope there are a few ideas listed here that are new to you and will make your life even just a little bit easier. We will always do whatever we can to help you and that is our guarantee.

  • Start packing at least two weeks in advance of moving day.
  • Check grocery/liquor stores for free boxes.
  • Uniformly sized boxes stack easier for both moving and storage.
  • Be sure boxes are strong enough to hold 25-30 lbs.
  • Use smaller boxes for heavier items and larger boxes for lightweight bulky items.
  • Fill each box completely and compactly. Do not overfill or under-fill.
  • On each box:
    • List Contents
    • Assign a number
    • Indicate on each box which room that box belongs in (for final move)
  • Prepare an inventory record of box numbers and contents for referral at a later date.
  • Seal all boxes with packing tape.
  • Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in tissue or packing paper and packed in sturdy boxes. Newspaper is good padding for most items. However, newspaper ink smears, which may result in additional cleaning when unpacking.
  • Do not pack fragile and heavy items in the same box.
  • Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard and marked “Fragile”.
  • Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for knickknacks, silverware, china, small items and the like. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent breakage.
  • Keep clothing in dresser drawers. You won’t need boxes for these items.
  • Large appliances make excellent “packing cases” for blankets, towels, tablecloths, etc.
  • Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored in empty garbage cans. Stack extra cans together.
  • Don’t move what you don’t need. Get rid of excess items by running an ad or by holding a garage sale. Consider Goodwill, Salvation Army or other charitable organizations for those discards.

Jiffy Self Storage has all the professional moving items that you need to make your move easier

  • BUBBLE WRAP will protect your fragile items, such as fine china. A little protection now, goes a long way later.
  • TAPE secures all your boxes so they don’t open while you’re loading, moving, or unloading.
  • ROPE ties down heavy objects, such as pianos and appliances, you can also use rope to tie off your truck load.
  • MATTRESS AND SOFA/CHAIR COVERS keep your furniture fresh and clean during the move or while in storage.
  • PROPER PACKING BOXES are important for the success of any move, in fact, we encourage you to buy more than you think you need because our policy here at Jiffy is to refund the full purchase price of any Jiffy box returned to us unused.
