Due to economy, charitable giving declines

While everyone enjoys receiving gifts that they can put in their homes or place in storage for future use, a new survey indicates Canadians are giving less often to charitable causes.

According to a recent survey conducted by Harris/Decima, charitable giving is on the decline in Canada. Approximately 38 percent of Canadians polled said they were more likely to give charitable gifts as holiday presents this year compared to last year, 13 percent less when contrasted with Americans and their charitable intentions.

"This downward trending poll is disheartening news for the world's most needy," said Jane Bargout, manager for a leading charitable relief organization. "While Canadians still maintain they would prefer to receive a gift that would help someone else, the number who have actually received a charitable gift has declined by 5 percent."

The decline in giving is largely the result of respondents feeling the effects of the poor economic climate, the poll found. Despite this, Bargout was hopeful that Canadians will increase their charitable giving as the holiday season nears.
