While social media websites like Facebook and Twitter may have gotten their start in the U.S., in many cases, the use of these websites by Canadians outpaces the number of Americans who log on.
According to a 2010 study from eMarketer, some of the world's highest social networking usage rates come from Canada.
Statistics gathered by the data publishing firm indicate that since 2008, social media use has jumped by leaps and bounds. For instance, three years ago, Canadian users of websites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn totaled 11.4 million. Last year, that number jumped to 15.1 million.
As for this year, the study projects 16.1 million users will come from Canada. If the rate of increase continues on its current path, 18.4 million Canadians will be registered social media website users by 2014, the firm anticipates.
"Canadians are readily adopting social network activities, often at rates higher than users in the U.S.," said Mike Froggatt, eMarketer analyst.
