Study argues Toronto could host two additional hockey teams

With temperatures rising and ice-covered ponds thawing out, many hockey fans are grudgingly putting their ice skates back in their storage units for another year. But if a report about Toronto’s ability to host two more NHL teams comes true, those hockey skates won’t be stowed away for long.

A recent report from the Mowat Centre for Policy Innovation at the University of Toronto argues that the city’s infrastructure and strong demand – only one of the six Canadian teams failed to sell out every game in the 2009-2010 season – makes it the ideal home for two additional teams, which would force Torontonians to decide where their allegiances lie.

Some NHL teams, such as the Thrashers and Coyotes, are also rumored to be considering relocation.

But the study doesn’t stop at two. In fact, it argues that Canada as a whole could host 12 teams, but it cites Toronto as being the best city of them all due to its population growth, corporate strength, and high number of high-income households.

The study also cited Toronto’s loyal fan base for the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team that unfortunately fell eight points shy of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which get underway on Wednesday.
