Mayor wants Toronto to join the NFL

With the Toronto real estate market back on track, the city is looking to keep businesses in the black and storage units stacked by bringing some heavy-hitting residents to the Greater Toronto area.

According to CBC News, Mayor Rob Ford thinks the National Football League needs some Toronto representation.

“How can we bring tourism to Toronto? How can we create jobs? Great fit would be an NFL team,” Ford told the station.

CBC News received a mixed reaction from fans and sports columnists as to the feasibility of a Toronto football team, but Ford says one of the biggest hurdles will be in finding the money to build a new stadium.

Should the city host its own team, the Greater Toronto Area would likely see a rise in employment and population, as more businesses would move to the area to take advantage of a multi-billion dollar industry. However, with the league’s collective bargaining agreement expiring in March, the NFL’s short-term business may be in question, as owners are threatening to lock out the players and cancel the season if the players don’t agree to some of the owners’ demands.
