For the most part, Ontarians will be budget-conscious when they're out shopping for holiday gifts and restricting how much they spend for Christmas.
The poll, conducted on behalf of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, found that 67 percent of respondents from Ontario said they would stay within their budget and pay for items chiefly by cash or credit card. Eighty-eight percent also said they would either spend less or about the same as they did in 2010.
While respondents said they'd mainly shop for items with cash or debit, paying via credit card was a common response as well, as 31 percent said they would purchase gifts through credit. When asked why, a majority of those polled said it was to collect on reward points issuers offer and because it was convenient.
"Whether you choose to use cash, debit or credit, there are ways to track spending to help you stay within your budget and keep up with your regular savings plan," said Colette Delaney, senior vice-president of CIBC's lending division.
