Malcolm X documents found at self storage facility

A self storage renter recently came across some exciting historic documents after bidding on a unit at a facility in Connecticut. According to the Associated Press, the renter found more than 1,000 documents and items, including papers that outlined the crimes that put civil rights leader Malcolm X behind bars in the 1940s.

All of the artifacts and paperwork were found to have belonged to late musician Malcolm "Shorty" Jarvis. The AP reports that Jarvis spent time in jail with Malcolm X and later became one of his dearest friends.

After coming across such historic information, the renter decided to contact The Malcolm X Memorial Foundation and the Black History 101 Mobile Museum to see if they were interested in the finds.

"Once [the buyer] found out that it was of a significant historical nature, he decided then he didn’t want to break the collection up," Khalid el-Hakim, founder of the Mobile Museum told the publication. "He wanted to make sure it went to the right home."

The items found in the storage unit will now spilt time between the Malcolm X Center in Omaha, Nebraska, and at the Mobile Museum, in Detroit, Michigan, according to the source.

Self storage isn't just great for finding possible treasure, it also continues to thrive as a business even during financial hardships. The Erie Times-News reports that the total number of space in the U.S. that's used for storage has grown to more than 2.2 billion square feet.
