How to Pack Quickly for a Last Minute Move

Packing all your belongings to get ready for a big move can be extremely daunting, and many might not know where to begin. It can get even more frustrating when you are forced to move on a whim and have to quickly gather your belongings with little notice or time to plan.

If you find yourself in this situation, whether through financial, employment, or personal circumstances, then don’t fret. Our tips below can help you make quick work of packing up and jumping ship. While it may be difficult and certainly tiring, with a little planning and preparation, your last minute move can go a lot smoother than you expect.

Prepare Supplies and Boxes

First, you need to gather and prepare the supplies that you would normally need when moving and packing your belongings. This includes tape, bubble wrap, labels, and, most importantly, boxes. At this point, you don’t have the luxury of gathering up free cardboard boxes here and there. That would be much too time consuming when you’re in a pinch. Instead, to save time, you may just have to go straight to the source and purchase your supplies in one go. This way, you’ll be ready to start packing in record time with all that you need at your fingertips.

Pack Essentials First

In the midst of all the chaos, it’s easy to simply forget about the essentials that really matter. Perhaps you got too busy packing furniture and décor that you forgot where you put the baby’s diapers. Make it easy for yourself by packing essentials in a separate bag before you begin with the rest of items. This way, you can rest assured that the things you may need to reach for within a moment’s notice are ready in a duffel bag or small suitcase nearby.

Throw Away Items

In your efforts to save time, remember to try and lighten your load as much as possible by throwing away or donating items that you don’t need. Now is the best time to start decluttering and getting rid of those things that are of no use or value to you anymore. It will mean fewer items to pack and take with you on your move. The last thing you want to do is end up hauling items from one place to another only to find that there are a bunch of things that you don’t really need anymore. Save yourself the frustration and get down to the items you really love and want in your next home. Not only is it a great way to ensure a fresh start, but it will also help move the process along much faster.

Do Sorting Later

Now that you’re in a crunch, you can’t afford to do all the minor sorting and organizing you might attempt if you had more time. Sort items by room for more ease and don’t sweat it so much if things fall through the cracks of your plans. There’ll be plenty of time to sort and arrange once you’re in your new place and settled down. Use the time you have now to make sure everything you own gets to your new place intact and without damage. Instead of fiddling with foams and bubble wrap, cover your fragile items up with clothes, blankets, or towels. Don’t worry about folding clothes; also, labelling such items will only take up precious time that could be better put to use.

Call a Professional

When push comes to shove and you feel way in over your head, it may be time to call in some professional movers. They have the tools and manpower to get your belongings packed and moved within a short time frame, with no hassle to you. If you can’t rally up some friends or family to help, then professional movers will be a great option to get you going. As well, with professional help, you really don’t have to worry about repaying any favours.

Rent Self-Storage

Believe it or not, renting a self-storage unit can save you a great deal of time and hassle when planning your next move. Moving your items directly into your storage unit keeps them out of sight, allowing you to continue packing without distractions. When moving day comes around, unpacking will be much easier with your things already packed into storage. Simply unload them from the storage unit and feel free to do so at your own pace.

Packing up and moving doesn’t have to be a challenge when you have the right mindset and preparation from the start. Looking on the bright side, a last minute move really forces you to get up and do the work you might otherwise sit on for weeks. Get ahead of the game by utilizing these tips and make packing a breeze.
