Genius Packing Tips When You’re Moving

Moving is not an easy task and can be stressful for anyone which is why most people try to minimize the number of times they have to do it throughout their lives. While it can be exciting to move into a new home, a new city, a new country, or even just down the street, the amount of effort and coordination that goes into moving all of your furniture and belongings from one location to another is not something most people would find enjoyable. If you are in the midst of a move or are planning a move shortly, you’ll want to consider this handy list of genius packing tips to help you get through it more efficiently.

Be selective

A big mistake that many people make when moving is trying to take absolutely everything. Many people think that just because something was in location A, it automatically needs to be transported to location B. That’s not the case! Weed out the belongings that are no longer useful to you by deciding whether or not you’ve put it to use recently or if it’s ancient history. Unless the object is likely to increase in value over time or has sentimental value to you, it’s probably not worth keeping.

Organize things based on category

This is one packing tip you can’t do without. The best way to keep things manageable and to not get overwhelmed by the amount of organization it takes to pack up an entire household is to categorize your belongings based on use or location in the home. Some examples of categories are kitchen appliances, clothing, movies, and books, etc. Start by packing each category at a time instead of spreading yourself across the entire house. If that category happens to be clothing, gather all of the clothing from each closet and begin packing, rather than doing it one closet at a time and trying to sort through all the different categories.

Label everything

When in doubt, always label things during a move. Better to go overboard on the labels than not know what you are putting into the truck or what box you are opening up once you get to the new place.

Spreadsheets

Perhaps the overarching message of all the other packing tips on this list is: Stay organized. The best way to stay organized is to keep track of what you have done and what you plan to do. Create a spreadsheet you can access to make sure you know exactly where you stand at all times.

Be a smart packer

The bottom line is, smart packers have successful moves. This means doing things like packing heavier items in small boxes and light items in even smaller boxes.

Economize on space

Instead of having an individual box for everything, look for ways to utilize larger items such as suitcases and baskets to store smaller items. This will help to maximize the amount of floor and vertical space you have at your disposal.

Wrap things well

Use paper and bubble wrap for anything fragile and make sure any liquids are stored in a tightly sealed container. You don’t want the unpleasant surprise of opening a box only to find out the shampoo or the cologne has spilled all over your clothing or cookware.

Utilize original boxes

If you are moving electronics, the best and most protective boxes are the original boxes the items were purchased in.

Make an essentials box

Similar to having a carry-on when you board a plane. You are going to need certain things once you get to the new place and you don’t want to have to sift through all your boxes just to find your essentials like a toothbrush, an extra set of clothes, mobile phone charger, laptop, and medications. Pack these in your essentials box and set it aside from all the other boxes.

Packing tips for big moves will not only save you space and time; but they will also save you hassle and headache once you get to the new place and need to start the unpacking process. Keep these helpful tips in mind, and you should find that packing and moving will never have felt as straightforward.
