Youth moving to cities hurts farmers

Many young Canadians are moving into cities and urban centers, which might explain high real estate prices as of late and why so many are looking into Toronto self storage facilities. Unfortunately, the rural communities these youngsters are abandoning are being hurt by the migration, according to a new study.

A report released by the BMO Bank of Montreal finds the mass shift away from rural areas toward urban centers is having a big impact on agriculture in Canada. Approximately 62 percent of family farms say they're being negatively impacted by young adults moving away from home. In many cases, farms that would have once passed down to the next generation instead see the kids moving to different career paths in an urban setting.

"It is easy enough to take agriculture for granted when you have a grocery store full of food, but to sustain this, we need young people in agriculture. A main area of focus for the Canadian Federation of Agriculture is intergenerational transfers and building long-term profitability into farming operations," said Canadian Federation of Agriculture President Ron Bonnett.

Youngsters moving into big cities may not be helping out on the family farm, but they're likely excited about their new life in an urban hotspot. Affordable Toronto self storage units can be very beneficial for new arrivals, who may not have a place for all their items right away.

Jiffy Self Storage, a leader in Toronto storage solutions, is currently running a contest on their website for a free iPad 3. Visitors to the site simply need to match a few Canadian landmarks and they'll be entered to win the iPad or one of several other prizes.
