Toronto moving away from single-family houses

In May, Bryan Tuckey took over as president of the Building Industry and Land Development Association, a move that is expected to change how people are living in the Greater Toronto Area, as the population is expected to increase from 6.3 million people to 8 million people by 2031, the Toronto Star reported.

Under the 2006 Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, Tuckey and the association are required to create new developments accommodating at least 50 people, tightening the reigns on urban sprawl. This housing plan encourages residents to consider self storage for their belongings, as it would seem single family homes are going to be few and far between in the future. Freeing up space in a condo will be crucial, especially with storing seasonal items.

“This is a very complete community,” Tuckey of the pleasant South Downtown neighbourhood that has sprung up just in the last decade, told the Toronto Star. “People can live, work and play their whole life here, just a few hundred metres from their home and within easy walking distance of transit.”

Ten years ago, nearly 75 percent of all new homes in the Greater Toronto Area were single-family houses and 25 percent were condos. Now, condos account for 63 percent of new home sales and single family houses account for just 38 percent.

Self storage can be a smart way to hang on to valuable items without taking up room in a house or apartment. For Toronto storage solutions, there's no better than Jiffy Self Storage.
