Report: To remain competitive, retailers must embrace mobile revolution

Due to financial uncertainty at the global level, consumer confidence in Canada isn't as high as it's been in the past. As a result, professional services firm KPMG says businessowners will have to re-strategize if they want their company to thrive in 2012.

Willy Kruh, chairman of consumer markets for KPMG, says this is particularly true for retailers.

"We're right at the cusp of a mobile-commerce revolution, and retailers who are unprepared risk losing market share," said Kruh. "Retailers who leverage new technology based models like e-commerce and shopping via mobile devices, also known as m-commerce, will come out on top."

Recent studies suggest that 20 percent of retailers' mobile traffic comes from tablets such as the iPad, yet less than half of retailers say they have "mobile-optimized" website capabilities.

Jiffy Self-Storage recognized the trend toward mobile devices earlier this year. As part of a giveaway contest – the Great Toronto Jiffy Landmark competition – grand prize winners were rewarded with an Apple iPad, Dell Notebook and Kindle e-Reader.
