Ontario electricity fee rises as big businesses save

A recent report by an electricity market watchdog group in Ontario alleges that big businesses are paying much less for the electricity they use than households and other residents, according to the Toronto Star.

Electric companies charge a fee called the "global adjustment," or GA. Essentially, this is paying for electricity that isn't traded on the open market.

In the past, the GA fee was determined by electricity usage. If you used one percent of Ontario's electricity, you paid one percent of the GA. However, a program introduced last year called "High Five" allows select companies that use a large amount of power to reduce their GA fee if they cut power usage during the five peak times of the year. Unfortunately, the report shows that these savings by big businesses were then passed on to consumers – household electricity bills were up four percent mainly to cover the savings the businesses earned through the program.

Instead of moving to a larger home and racking up larger utility bills, Canadian residents may want to consider utilizing self storage in order to free up more space in their existing home. There are many options for affordable self storage in Toronto and other Canadian cities that can help homeowners get more space without breaking the bank.

Self storage can be a smart way to hang on to valuable items without taking up room in a house or apartment. For Toronto storage solutions, there's no better than Jiffy Self Storage.
