Many home sellers going it alone

With the economic downturn still taking a toll on many Americans, some homeowners who are planning on selling their house are looking to avoid the high commissions many real estate agents charge. The result is a new trend of people selling houses on their own, or with minimal input from real estate experts, reports Moneyville.ca.

Several new companies allow homeowners to choose how much input they'd like to have from an agent. Those who take a few consultations or ask a few questions can end up paying commissions like 2 percent or even half-a-percent – a bargain compared to the 6 percent and up that some real estate agents charge.

Yet one seller, who wished to remain anonymous, says he was glad that he hired a real estate agent after initially planning to sell his house himself.

"Maybe I chickened out when agents started showing up and I realized I was going to have my own bidding war," the seller told the news source. "I got stressed and called an agent friend I knew. He hired cleaners, switched some furniture, did an open house. I got nearly $100,000 more than I expected, so the 6-per-cent commission was a deal."

Sellers may want to move some of their items into self storage in order to offer a more presentable home, especially if they're selling on their own, as this can clearly increase the value of a house.

Self storage can be a smart way to hang on to valuable items without taking up room in a house or apartment. For Toronto storage solutions, there's no better than Jiffy Self Storage.
