Malware-infected computers to lose internet access

Computers affected by malware could be kicked off the internet on Monday if their owners do not effectively clean them up over the weekend, reports The Associated Press.

The situation ties back to a group of hackers who put malware on an estimated 570,000 computers approximately one year ago. The malware was being used to control computers remotely, according to the news source. The FBI caught the hackers, but quickly found out that if they shut down the hacker's servers, all of the affected computers would instantly lose internet access.

The FBI ultimately decided to host the infected computers on separate "safety net servers," but those will be shut down on Monday. Owners of infected computers have been contacted, but approximately 277,000 are thought to still be infected. These users will lose their internet access once the safety nets are shut down.

With businesses under constant threat from malware and viruses, it's important to have physical backups of all critical documents. One way to do this is to rent affordable document storage space. This way, businesses will always have the original copy if their hard drive is erased.

As the world grows digital, many are turning to online storage for their documents. However, it's always a good idea to have physical backups. Jiffy Self Storage is a leader in Toronto storage and can provide plenty of space for important files and other items.
