With many seniors in need of round-the-clock care, caregivers are quitting their jobs in order to take care of mom and dad at alarming rates, according to Reuters.
Recent research by Metlife indicates people lose more than $300,000 in potential earnings and retirement savings by quitting their jobs to care for an aging relative. The company estimates $3 trillion is lost annually by people who give up their careers in order to provide better care.
Often, those who make such a decision struggle financially. In fact, geriatric care expert Susan Fleischer tells the news source decisions are often "reactive" and people don't fully consider the financial impact.
Rather than quit your job, it might be a good idea to move your elderly loved one into a nursing home or assisted living facility. One of the things that holds many people back from doing this is forcing the parent to downsize from their existing home. Fortunately, this is where self storage solutions can be a great help. While the nursing home may provide a smaller living space for your parent than they are used to, you won't have to throw out all of their possessions if you instead decide to keep them in an affordable self storage unit.
Jiffy Self Storage, a leader in Toronto storage solutions, is currently running a contest on their website for a free iPad 3. Visitors to the site simply need to match a few Canadian landmarks and they'll be entered to win the iPad or one of several other prizes.
