5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Store Your Seasonal Items At Home

In a country like Canada, where each new season brings with it a new set of clothing, equipment and decoration requirements, a household worth of items can quickly add up. Finding room for all four season’s stuff is not easy, which is why it is a good idea to consider what you really need to keep on hand, and for how long. Below are five reasons you shouldn’t store your seasonal items at home.

Why You Should Keep Your Seasonal Items In Self Storage

  1. Protect Them from Theft

This is especially true of expensive seasonal gear such as snow blowers, lawn mowers (ride on, or otherwise) and winter sports gear (such as skis and snowboards). These are all high value items that thieves typically target so keeping them safely guarded in a self storage unit when you are not using them is much better than keeping them in a storage shed.

  2. Store Decorations Until Needed

Some of the most common items that people end up putting in self-storage are seasonal decorations. So many holidays, such as Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day and Halloween, have a whole set of decorations that only goes up once a year and spends the other 51 weeks (give, or take), hanging around, collecting dust and taking up space.

  3. Free Up Space

The biggest reason to get those seasonal items out of your house is simply the space factor. Space is limited and keeping those ornaments or snowshoes hanging around for no reason means that your house, even your garage or other storage spaces where you typically keep things you aren’t currently using, will start to feel cluttered.

Preserve Your Winter Items

This is particularly true if you are a skier or snowboarder, as high temperatures can actually compromise the integrity of the equipment, damaging the glue that binds the layers of the skis together. Skis should be stored at room temperature or cooler.

Maximize Efficiency

Another great reason to keep seasonal clothing out of sight and out of mind until you need them is to maximize the efficiency with which you are able to go about your life. Instead of having to spend time rifling through a closet full of winter jackets to find your spring windbreaker, keep seasonal clothing stored away until you know you are going to need it.

Space is at a premium in the 21st century, whether it’s in your house, in your neighbourhood, or really anywhere else. Anytime we can have more of it, it’s a good idea, and your home’s storage spaces are no exception. Keep your seasonal items stored in a self-storage unit and rest assured that they are well looked after and out of your hair until you really and truly need them.
