How to Store Holiday Decorations

It’s a great feeling when you open up your holiday decorations from the storage container that you held them in all year long. You see the flash of cheerful colours, sparkles, and the promise of beautiful memories to be made with friends and family. What you wouldn’t like to see is broken baubles, damaged lights, and once perfect decorations that are no longer in usable condition.

How can you prevent your precious holiday decorations from becoming broken, damaged, or distorted during storage months? This may be a question that has popped up in your head once or twice during the years of festivities. In this article, we will discuss some of the best ways to store your holiday décor so that it remains beautiful and pristine for many years to come.

Choose Climate-Controlled

Climate-controlled storage units for your valuable or fragile items is definitely a must. These units ensure that the temperature does not fluctuate drastically, and that your items are not exposed to extreme heat or cold. Changing temperatures or changes in humidity can damage electronics, documents, certain materials, and décor items like furniture pieces. While it may cost more for a climate-controlled unit, you are giving yourself the peace of mind that your items will be safe and in good condition when you retrieve them.

Separate Items and Wrap Individually

In order to prevent damage to your holiday décor, you should wrap items individually and keep them separated from each other as much as possible. In other words, don’t just dump everything into boxes randomly. If you do this, cords will become tangled, and your ornaments will get lost in a giant mess that could potentially destroy them. Don’t overpack boxes with items, and avoid packing at the last minute, which can lead to rushed disorganisation.

Use Clear Plastic Bags for Ease

Clear, plastic Ziploc bags will certainly be your friend during the holiday packing and clean-up process. You can use these to keep certain items together, and so that things don’t inexplicably disappear. The benefit here is that you can also see what is being put away, and if you need something, it will be easier for you to find.

Shrink Wrap That Tree

Do you need a simple yet effective way to keep your tree clean, protected, and undamaged while in storage? For your artificial trees, be sure to protect and cover them with shrink wrap or cloth so that branches do not fall off or get lost in storage. Everything will stay together much better this way, and your tree will keep looking great for the next time you need it. It will also be much easier to handle and unpack once stored in shrink wrap.

Use Cardboard for Lights

To ensure that your holiday lights don’t become tangled in a giant mess during storage, wrap the lights around cardboard pieces so they stay firmly in place. This will keep them from becoming loose and getting tangled up in each other. You will be thankful you did so when it comes time to unravel them and put them back up again.

Put Old Storage Boxes to Use

You know all those old storage boxes that you’ve kept during the years, or the shoeboxes you’ve kept in the closet? These old boxes should now come in handy more than ever. Use them to store and separate your décor items, and to place more fragile items that may require extra cushioning.

Hang Items When Necessary

Keep in mind that some holiday décor items such as wreaths, garlands, and hanging ornaments may be better-stored upright or by being hung. In this case, you can keep these items in your closet or on a rack that you then put into storage. You may even consider investing in some dust bags to ensure extra protection for these items.

Make Labels and Store By Season

Lastly, you want to keep order and organisation when packing up your holiday décor. This could mean making labels for each box you put away, and storing in a methodical way such as by season, festivity, or type of décor. Choose a method that works for you, and be consistent so that you won’t have any troubles finding items when you need them.

Ultimately, everyone wants to enjoy beautiful holiday décor, and no one wants to have their items damaged in storage. It’s all a matter of using the proper precautions, and doing the utmost to ensure your items are safely tucked away in storage. Choose the right storage container, and always opt for climate-controlled storage to keep your items in tip-top shape. The peace of mind that you receive will be invaluable.
