Using self-storage units has become a way of life for many people. Self-storage units can improve your lifestyle for many reasons. They can make home organization a big possibility, first of all. They can make navigating brand new phases in life a lot simpler, too. If you’re relocating from one location to another, rental of self-storage units can often be extremely helpful and convenient.

People who want to make the most out of self-storage unit security, however, have to be smart and detail-oriented. There are various options accessible to people who want to have A+ storage rental experiences. Lack of security can be a massive concern for people who rent self-storage units.

  1. Select The Right Storage Facility

If you want to make a good choice, you need to be detail-oriented and careful and make a point to select the ideal storage unit beforehand. Assess all of your individual needs prior to committing to any facilities. Take the time to study up on all facilities that you hear about, too. Don’t take the chance of selecting self-storage facilities that are known for questionable security practices. Go for self-storage facilities that have amazing track records.

If you have a friend who is basically a self-storage usage veteran, ask them the name of their center. Ask about their experience with the company as far as security goes. Once you find facilities that have terrific reputations, you can move on from there. Choosing a center with confidence is always the key to attaining security levels that make you feel at ease. There’s honestly no point in going with a storage center that makes you feel uneasy or uncertain. The key to optimizing self-storage unit security is finding the ideal center from the start.

  2. Take Advantage Of Top-Notch Locks

You actually have some control over the level of security your self-storage units offer you. If you want to invest in rock-solid security for your self-storage units, then you need to make getting top-notch locks a priority. Never make the mistake of using locks that are anything less than A+ in quality. Locks that are dependable can keep possibly suspicious activities out of your thoughts at all times. That’s how they can help you relax. The last thing anyone wants to do is to have to constantly think about the threat of theft and tampering. It isn’t unheard of for people who use self-storage centers to neglect locking their units, believe it or not. If you leave your unit or units free of locks, you’re practically asking criminals to head to it and steal your belongings.

  3. Choose Self-Storage With Video Surveillance

There are self-storage facilities out there that are equipped with all kinds of amenities to help promote higher safety levels. If you want to keep your secured storage units 100 percent safe at all hours of the night and day, then you should look into facilities that offer video surveillance. It’s no surprise that video surveillance systems can enhance security arrangements within storage facilities. Modern video surveillance tools give people the ability to supervise storage properties around the clock, no exceptions.

Video surveillance systems come in handy for people who want to keep tabs on any and all individuals who make their way inside of storage centers. These systems can be extremely useful in the event of suspicious activities. That’s because they produce recordings that law enforcement specialists can view and assess during investigations of all kinds.

If police officers want to be able to track down thieves, video surveillance systems can be useful. It isn’t uncommon for storage facilities to utilize video surveillance systems alongside sophisticated security alarms. These things can alert the authorities to possible problems. That’s how they can motivate authorities to respond to situations that are pressing and possibly dangerous. If you want to do everything you can to minimize the possibilities of theft, then you need to give your time to a self-storage center that has a state of the art video surveillance system on its side.

  4. Diligence is Always the Best Option

If you take these three factors into consideration, you shouldn’t run into any troubles optimizing your storage unit security setup. Appropriately secured storage units can make you feel good about your center choice. They can stop you from wasting crucial time thinking about your belongings as well.

If you want your self-storage usage to be devoid of anxiety and nerves, then you need to do everything in your capacity to prepare well. That means that you shouldn’t ever select a center in an impulsive manner. Another thing you can do to feel good about your storage approach is to make a point to stop by the facilities frequently. It doesn’t matter if you actually need to get your hands on any of your specific belongings. It is always be a good idea to see how things are going. You can look into your units to evaluate them for any hints of possible damage. You can assess components such a climate control. You can even see if the security gates that are available outside of the center are doing their job well.

Storage units hold our valuables and we trust them with things we really care about. However, are storage units really secure?

At Jiffy Storage, we make security our top priority. So yes, our storage units with their unique features are definitely secure!

We make sure there are CCTV cameras at every entry point of our vaults. Our storage units are password protected, which means only those who have the pin code can enter the units. Only well lit, completely official real estate properties are maintained by us. Add a stringent employee protocol to these features and you have a theft-proof, secure storage unit at hand.

However, security is a two-way endeavor. We do our best to ensure no breaches from our side and expect the same from you. Here are a few things you must always keep in mind before investing in a self-storage unit.

  • Get insurance

For most people, insurance often seems unnecessary and that’s where they go wrong. You have absolutely no control over fire and floods. Secure your goods (at least monetarily) from not only burglars but natural calamities. While insurance policies for storage systems are not compulsory, it is best to not take chances. They usually cost less than $10 per month and provide you coverage for accidental damage to your goods.

Be cautious and diligent when it comes to choosing a plan. Read the terms and conditions thoroughly and understand what is covered and what isn’t. Often, the homeowner’s insurance or the renter’s insurance covers it, but if it doesn’t – don’t hesitate, get an insurance policy.

  • Maintain an inventory list

Keep a record of every item you have stored in the unit. If it’s a huge unit, keep a record in a way so as to help organize the space better. This not only keeps the place looking stacked and pretty, but also helps in cases of insurance claims. Apart from the item’s name, you must also keep a list of corresponding values of items stored. If you have stored electronic items, note down their unique serial numbers. All this can come in extremely handy if you happen to lose your goods or the storage unit is struck by some disaster and you need to claim a refund. Try and maintain a number of photographs as proof as well.

  • Buy a lock

Yes, a physical lock and key. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Though storage units have their lock-down systems, it is best to have your own physical lock. Invest in a good disc lock and secure your belongings. Why a disc lock? Because it’s impossible to cut through it. If somebody tries to pick it, it will make a loud grinding noise thereby attracting a lot of attention, which is good news for keeping your belongings theft-proof. If you are choosing an outdoor storage unit, a lock is a must for you. Remember to keep the keys with you — after all, that’s the point of maintaining a lock, right?

  • Keep your access code a secret

In most cases, it is one of the friends or family of the owner that tries to steal important things. To be safe on that front, it’s best to not tell people where you’re storing your valuables. You must never share your passcode or pin with anybody, and if using a physical lock, you must never lend the keys to anybody. When visiting your storage unit, choose to do so alone or with your very close family members. Be very careful of who you bring along with you while on inspection of your units.

  • Choose indoor storage for extra security

At Jiffy self-storage, outdoor storage units are as secure as indoor ones. However, it’s preferable to opt for an indoor storage system if you want to eliminate chances of damage due to an easier access location. Typically, an indoor storage unit is protected by keypad locks and is very safe with the added benefit of a number of gates to pass through before reaching the destination.

  • Environmental protection

If you’re opting for a temperature controlled or a climate controlled storage unit, you’re secured from environmental threats. If do not invest in one of the above storage units, you must pay special attention to the location, atmosphere, and other environmental factors. Keep a close check on the state of your items. If you see mold or mildew growing on your furniture, it’s time you change the storage unit. It’s particularly important to check the room temperature of the unit when storing artworks. To avoid the hassle, it’s best to opt for a climate controlled storage unit. You can then maintain both the humidity and temperature of the unit to suit your requirements.

  • Take basic precautionary steps

Place your belongings on a skid rather than placing them directly on the floor. Keep your items wrapped in heavy-duty plastic to prevent dust and insects. Don’t place valuable goods in plain sight, preferably place them behind everything else. Use similar boxes to make stacking easy and make sure they’re not very light – if they’re half empty, the stacks may collapse. Also, avoid stacking too high or else your things may get damaged if they fall accidentally. Arrange goods in a way so that accessibility does not become an issue. It is a good idea to get some shelves to organize your storage unit better. Make sure you don’t put a lot of load on delicate items. Keep an eye on your unit and inspect it regularly. Make surprise visits a habit.

Storing your belongings, whether in your own home, or off-site in a storage facility, means taking security measures. Most people invest in a simple padlock to keep their unit locked-up and their items protected while they are not there, but is that $5 lock really enough? Below are some more robust lock options to ensure that your items are protected at all times.

Cylinder Locks

Most people will recognize a cylinder lock from the front door of many homes. They are typically flat and round and are a great option for self storage because they are nearly impossible to cut with bolt cutters (simply too hard and thick). They vary in price from $10 to $100. One notable downside is that they are somewhat complicated to replace or fix if you don’t have any experience.

Disc Locks

These are similar to traditional padlocks, except they are round and more difficult to break into. They are commonly available at most hardware stores, and it is easy to find one that will fit your storage facility door. There are certainly $5 options on the market, but spending a little more will buy a more robust and secure disc lock.

Closed Shackle Padlock

The shackle is the u-shaped part on your padlock. Open shackle padlocks are the most common self storage locks, and normally the cheapest, but also the least secure. A closed shackle padlock is one where the shackle is encased in a protective barrier, making it much harder to cut with bolt cutters.

The question of whether your $5 lock is enough security really depends on the level of security you require. If you are keeping valuable items in your storage unit that would be either extremely costly, or impossible to replace (because of sentimental value), you probably are not going to feel too comfortable with a $5 lock. On the other hand, if your self storage facility has comprehensive security measures in place (including cameras and adequate staff), you might feel confident enough to purchase the tried and true $5 padlock.

Either way, keep the above lock choices and considerations in mind, and choose the lock that is right for you and your security needs.
