Moving overseas for work is stressful enough as it is without having to worry about what you are going to do with all your stuff. It can be especially stressful if you are leaving all of your stuff behind and you don’t know what you are going to do with it. If you are moving overseas for the long haul, or just for a little while, and you are using short term storage while you figure out what you are going do, below are some tips for moving your items.

How To Move Your Items When You Are Relocating Overseas

Break Down the Large Items

If you are going to be storing the majority of your furniture, you are going to want to maximize your return on investment by breaking down everything that can be broken down. Couches, bed frames, and shelving that can be disassembled should be. It will save you a lot of money on short term storage space.

Consider Short Term Drive Up Storage

If you are going to be moving a lot of larger, heavier items, you might want to consider looking for a short term self storage facility that offers drive up access to the unit. This way you can just recruit a friend to help you move and don’t have to call an expensive moving company in to help you.

Protect from Water Damage

When storing your items, it’s a good idea to make sure that everything you store is protected from water damage. Store furniture off of the floor by using wooden pallets or moving pads, and try to avoid placing cardboard boxes directly on the ground. You can stack them on top of plastic crates, wooden pallets, or other things in the unit, such as furniture.

Pack Your Items Properly

One of the most important aspects of storing your items while you are away is taking the time to plan for making it easy to take your items out. You should always organize your short term storage unit so that the heaviest items are at the front, and there is a clear pathway that allows you to access every part of the unit.

Storage might seem like one more added hassle you have to endure while you are trying to move your life overseas. Worrying about what will become of your belongings while you are away, and more importantly, how you are going to get them from your current place into storage, can definitely feel like drudgery. But, if you keep the above moving and storage tips in mind, you can leave the country feeling comfortable that your items are safe, sound, and ready to use when you get back.

With that big move in the coming weeks, your mind is probably already focused on how you’re going to design the new space and integrate the family. But it’s also important to think about the moving process. It’s during this time that priceless belongings can be broken and even lost—so, in this post, we’ll help guide you with three tips for keeping belongings safe during a move.

3 Safety Tips For Home Movers

  1. Commit to Smart Packing

The packing process is the most important part of moving homes. It determines the safety of your belongings during transit. To begin the smart packing process, create an inventory of each of the items ready to be packed. This list can then be checked off as you pack each item. Remember to keep this inventory in a safe place during the moving process, so that it can be referred to as you complete your move.

Reinforce all boxes with packing tape and make sure that heavier items are well-labeled and placed in separate boxes. When moving these items, remember to work in teams and to following safe procedures for picking up and transporting heavy items. You might also consider specialized packing products, such as wardrobe boxes for clothes. This type of moving equipment can help to streamline the move.

  2. Store Items That Don’t Have Value in the Short-Term

If you’re moving into a new home, you might not have the required space for all of your older belongings. While you might want to keep your children’s old pictures and your wedding albums, these items don’t have to be kept directly within the home to be protected. Before you commit to moving these products, consider a self-storage option. Storage facilities can help keep your precious belongings safe and ensure they’re available for when you add more storage space within your new property.

  3. Buy Moving Insurance

Working with a moving company can provide you with complete comfort as you complete the move. The company should have comprehensive experience within the local marketplace and should be able to prove this experience. You may also wish to purchase moving insurance. Insurance will ensure you’re compensated for any breakages or losses that occur as a result of your home move.

By following the tips within this post, you can help protect each of your precious items during the home moving process. To learn more, speak with our team today.

A temporary relocation for work, or simply for a change of scenery can be a great energy boost to your life, but it also inevitably means making plans to store anything that you won’t, or can’t bring with you. A temporary relocation is not the same as a permanent one and requires that you tailor your packing and planning to account for the shorter time period. Below are some tips for storing your items during a temporary relocation.

Storage During A Temporary Relocation

Find out what’s included in your new accommodation. Before you decide to pack or store anything, you will need to find out what your new space includes in terms of furniture and space to store anything that you consider vital and would like to bring with you. If your new temporary space is fully furnished, consider keeping your old furniture that you would like to come back to in a storage unit for the time being.

Consider the climate. Whatever you end up storing while you are away will need to be amply protected from whatever climate you are leaving. This could mean plastic wrapping anything you would like to protect from the humidity, or making sure that a storage unit is temperature controlled to protect from extreme cold temperatures.

Place the most important items where they are easiest to reach. Make a list of the items that you will immediately need when you move into your permanent space but will not need for the temporary relocation. Box and store those items where they are easiest to reach so that you can quickly get your life back on track when you have found more permanent accommodation.

Don’t forget the essentials and valuables. You will want to take all of your vital documentation with you, as well as important electronics, toiletries, anything that your kids, family or pets will need and store the rest.

Keep what you can in the car. If you are driving to your new temporary location, try and keep as much of what you need stored in the car. If you have a van, or truck with a decent amount of storage space that you won’t be using any time soon, keeping things tucked away in the vehicle will eliminate the amount of loading and unloading you have to do while you figure out your more permanent living situation. Make sure that nothing valuable remains in plain sight.

Temporary moves come with their own set of moving, packing and storage considerations. If you are moving somewhere temporarily, whether it be for work, for school, or during a home renovation, keep the above temporary relocation tips in mind and minimize the amount of packing and unpacking that you will need to do.
