Two of the most commonly stored items in self storage units are furniture and mattresses. We all end up changing or upgrading mattresses and furniture at various points throughout our lives, so it makes sense that these items often end up in storage. They are also, however, two of the most common items to find stored incorrectly. For those planning on putting furniture or a mattress into a storage unit, below are some of the reasons it pays to wrap both of these items before putting them away for any length of time.

Avoid Scratching

When putting your items into furniture storage, you should always wrap them up to avoid damaging the pieces themselves, or any other objects around them. If you decide to put multiple pieces of furniture away into storage, only to decide a couple of months later that something has to come out, do so very carefully. If you are too rough taking it out, you might end up damaging the other pieces in the unit, or breaking the one you are removing.

Mold and Mildew

If you are storing furniture or mattresses in a region of the country where the climate is likely to wreak havoc on the material, then climate controlled storage is your best bet. However, if you are unable to secure a unit with climate control, or you are putting furniture into a unit that you have already rented and paid for, but does not have climate control, your items must go in covered. Mold and mildew can quickly take over any fabric in a unit, and nobody is going to want to use furniture or a mattress that is covered in green.

Termites

Termites love to make their homes within furniture. Termites are always a concern whenever you have wood around, and anyone who has seen the destruction that termites are capable of, knows they are no joke. Make sure you are covering any furniture going into self storage, especially if you know it is in an area where termites abound, to ensure that you are not providing a home for pesky termites.

Mattress and furniture storage requires some planning and some awareness of the risks involved, but, if you keep the above tips in mind, and ensure that you are not putting your mattresses and furniture in any unnecessary peril, you can put them into storage knowing they are well looked after and will be just as useful when you take them out.

At some point, most people are going to have to consider looking outside of their limited storage space to something off-site to help with their storage needs. This might include a trusted storage facility in your community that can help you store furniture while you decide what you are ultimately going to be doing with it. One of the most common items put into self storage is furniture, and many people worry that putting furniture into a self storage unit will cause warpage that will render the furniture unusable.

If you are wondering whether your furniture will warp in self storage, the below information will be useful before making any self storage decisions. It is generally the consensus that you really only need to worry about wood furniture when you put it into self storage. Metal and plastic is not going to be as susceptible to the elements as wood, so you really only need to be extra careful about putting wood furniture into storage.

Climate Controlled Storage

If you are planning on putting wood furniture into a self storage unit,, make sure you are moving your wood furniture somewhere with climate controlled storage. This really is the key to avoiding warping with wood furniture. The reason wood furniture warps is because of rapid changes in temperature which cause the wood to contract and expand, resulting in warped furniture. Most storage facilities will be able to provide you with a quick quote on storage pricing for a climate controlled storage unit.

Moisturize Before Storage

Another thing to consider with wood furniture is that you can undertake additional preventative measures before putting it into storage, to ensure you aren’t running the risk of warping it. While storage pricing that includes climate controlled storage is always a good idea, so too is cleaning and polishing the wood so that it is well moisturized before it enters self storage. If you put dry wood into self storage—even a climate controlled unit—you increase the chances that extra dry weather is going to come through and crack your wood furniture.

Finding a good, reliable self storage facility that offers climate controlled storage, and giving your wood furniture some TLC before putting it away into self storage, will go a long way to protecting your belongings while they are in a storage unit. Keep the above wood furniture storage considerations in mind before putting your wood furniture into storage long-term, and ensure it is in great condition when it comes time to take it out.

If you are planning a home renovation, chances are you have prepared yourself for the accompanying expenses. One of those that you have hopefully already considered, is what you are going to do with your furniture while you are renovating. If it is an extensive renovation and you don’t have room anywhere else in your home or business to store your furniture, one of the things that you might consider is storing your furniture in a self storage unit. Below are some things to know when placing your furniture in self storage during a renovation.

Storing Your Furniture During A Renovation

Give the Storage Unit a Once-Over Before Storing Anything

It is always a good idea to inspect your storage unit before putting anything into it, but even more so if you are using it for temporary furniture storage. You want your furniture to be in top shape when you take it out, so it is a good idea to give the unit a clean, and check for leaks and pests before you place any furniture in it.

Lay Down Some Plastic

It is a good idea to line the floor of your storage unit with plastic before putting any furniture in it. Plastic on the floor protects both the furniture and the floor (which you will be liable for if you damage it) and more importantly, makes it easier to slide furniture around when organizing the unit.

Disassemble What You Can

If you are able to disassemble any of your items before putting them into furniture storage, you should. Self storage units typically charge by both the amenities that you opt for, and the space. Break down what you can and, where possible, put the pieces back into the boxes they came in, if they are still around. This will maximize your use of space, and minimize the amount of space that you need.

Protect Your Furniture

This is probably one of the most important steps, especially if you are not going to be breaking your furniture down. If it is going in as is, wrap the furniture in padding, or storage blankets. You are also going to want to make sure that other items in your storage unit are protected. If your furniture has any sharp edges that could potentially do damage to artwork or electronics, tape or pad them off to minimize the risk of collateral damage.

Furniture storage is something that you probably don’t want to worry about if you are already in the middle of a big renovation. But, if you keep the above tips in mind, you can keep your furniture temporarily stored while you overhaul a room, and know that when you take things out after the reno has been completed, everything will look as great as it did when it went in.
