Most people do a big clean up during the holiday season in preparation for hosting friends and family. The holidays can make spaces feel tight and your home feel cluttered because of all the extra stuff everywhere—bulky clothes, decorations, gifts, food, people, etc. If you want to avoid feeling like the walls are closing in around you this holiday season, below are some tips to help you eliminate clutter.

A Self Storage Unit

It can quickly become overwhelming if you try to keep all of your winter gear and all of your summer gear together in your home. Seasonal clothing should make its appearance seasonally, and be safely tucked out of sight and out of mind for the rest of the year. If your hallway closet is filled with summer stuff at the moment, look into a self storage unit where you can keep it during the winter, so that you will have room for all the winter stuff.

Do a Once-Over of Your Home

There are clearly things in and around your home that are specifically for the warmer months. Because you are probably not going to be using them much, if at all, over the winter, they only create clutter. That margarita mixer on the counter in the kitchen, for instance, is a prime candidate for a self storage unit.

On the Patio

Putting up decorations outside, especially if you have young children, can be immensely rewarding. But if you already have a set of patio furniture out there, the big decorations, plus the lights, plus the furniture, can quickly add up to a cluttered mess. Think about storing the patio furniture in a self storage unit over the winter, so your winter wonderland doesn’t look like an overcrowded yard sale.

Straighten up

Decluttering often means simply straightening things up around the home. Putting books and magazines in their rightful places, making sure there are no cushions on the floors, cleaning throw rugs, etc. These little tasks may seem insignificant, but they really make a difference in the way your home looks and feels.

Getting your home ready for the holidays is definitely a task, but with things like self storage units and simple organizing tips, you can get your home decluttered, warm, and cozy for your friends and family.

We all have to admit it to ourselves sometimes: we accumulate too much. Whether it be gifts, poorly thought out purchases, things we’ve outgrown, or simply things that we don’t have space for anymore, sometimes we just need to offload junk. Ideally, we don’t want to simply throw things away, we want to be able to make some money off of the things we don’t have any use for. Below are some tips for selling your unwanted junk.

How To Get Rid Of Your Unwanted Junk

Find Out How Much Your Junk Goes for

If you are selling something, especially something that you think could be in relatively high demand, you might want to consider going online and figuring out what the market price is. If it’s something that you would like to make a bit of money on, but you are more concerned with simply unloading it, it is often useful to undercut the market price, especially if what you are selling is still in relatively good condition.

Self-Storage

If there are some things that you want to sell, and you aren’t willing to accept anything less than what they are worth, but you just don’t have the space to keep them around your home, consider investing in a self storage unit for the time being. Storage pricing and contracts are flexible, based on what you need to store and the amenities you are after.

Craigslist

When it doubt, put it up on Craigslist. Craigslist, for anyone who has never used it, is like a yard sale, but world wide. You simply create a free listing for what you are trying to sell, and wait for people to respond. Craigslist is great because it is visible to the entire world. Maybe there is someone who collects exactly what you are selling a few provinces or states away, who is willing to drive the distance and pay you exactly what you want for what you are offering. You never would have been able to reach this person if it weren’t for the internet.

A Yard Sale

You might want to get rid of something ASAP and keeping it in storage might not be an option. In that case, and instead of waiting on responses from the internet, consider having a yard sale. Advertising for a yard sale can consist of a hand full of flyers that you put up around your neighbourhood letting people know that you are having a fire sale and that all items must go. You might not get as much money for your junk with this option, but at least you will get something.

Selling your junk not only earns you money, but you can help extend the life of something that you no longer find useful, but someone else just might. If you want to hold out and see just how much you can get for your old junk, but don’t have the space to keep it sitting in your home, consider a self storage unit until you’ve found a buyer.

Winter is on its way out and spring is finally upon us. Time to put away the seasonal clothing, turn down the thermostat and most important of all, get the house ready for the new season. That means decluttering. One of the most important parts of decluttering, that really goes a long way to making it feel like you have optimized and economized on space, is proper document storage. If you are ready to declutter your home for spring and are looking for some great document storage tips, here are some to help get you started.

Decluttering Your Home For Spring

The Living Room

The living room should be high on the list of rooms to put in order because it’s where your family probably spends the bulk of their time together. Go through your shelves and look for books, DVDs, manuals and anything else that can and should be safely tucked away to make room for the things that really matter.

The Kitchen

Cooking and using the kitchen, especially when cooking for friends and family, can be truly delightful, but a kitchen full of clutter can take away some of the pleasure. One of the things that tends to clutter up kitchens, and that people simply overlook, is documents. This is especially true if the kitchen has a desk area that doubles as a homework station or place to store financial records. Go through drawers and gather the documents that you need, place them in labelled file folders, then into labelled boxes and, if there isn’t enough room in your home to store them, consider a self storage unit.

The Home Office

The home office can be hard to work from at the best of times, what with all the distractions around, but even more so when there is an accumulation of documents lying around and cluttering up the place. If you are someone who works from home, consider investing in a high quality filing cabinet (perhaps even one that is fireproof), or think about taking some of those old invoices, receipts, important contracts and legal documents, and looking at outside document storage options, like a self storage unit.

The Bathrooms

Bathrooms are one of those rooms that become more cluttered the more people you have using them. The shower, if left neglected, can quickly become a graveyard for empty shampoo and conditioner bottles, and the linen closet can become filled with towels that are virtually destroyed and never used, but remain there, taking up space.

Spring cleaning after a long, lethargic winter is not something that people generally look forward to, but the feeling of accomplishment once it has been checked off your ‘to do’ list is undeniable. Tackle spring cleaning and decluttering this year room by room and find space in your home for the things that you really need and that matter most.
