How To Set Up A Small Office Space

Most of us haven’t attained the cushy corner office yet, complete with sitting area, bar and L-shaped executive desk so we have to make do with less space. This means that the decisions we make with what we do have need to be a bit more strategized and well executed.

Small Office Set Up

If you are planning on setting up a small office space, here are five tips to consider that will help you get a lot out of a little.

Reduce your reliance on paper. Any office, but especially a smaller one, will become more agile the less it relies on paper. Going digital will reduce the need for bulky office furniture such as filing cabinets, which will take up the majority of the free floor space in your office.

Get rid of clutter. Clutter in a small space is not only a physical burden, but a mental one too. Feeling like the walls are closing in around you is a sure-fire way to decrease creativity and productivity. Choose your ornaments and decorations carefully in a small space, ones that will help promote creative and cognitive ability.

Utilize wall-to-wall flooring. Sometimes having a throw-mat or area rug in a small space can make it feel chopped up and disjointed. Having consistent flooring throughout your small office space creates a sense of continuity and actually makes the space feel larger and more well-appointed. Try and avoid tiles made out of hard materials as they can drastically alter the acoustics of a small room and create echoes, making phone conversations difficult.

Maximize your lumination. Track LED lighting or recessed LED lighting is the best way to light a small office space. Uplights tend to illuminate the ceiling and cast shadows over everything else and although these may create softer, more relaxing lighting, these are not appropriate for a productive workspace. Small LED desk lamps are better alternatives to floor lamps that also take up value surface area.

Label your cables. In a small space, cables and cords can quickly pile up into a labyrinthine mess and become impossible to make sense of. Labelling both ends of your cables, either with cable tags or markers, will let you know what you are plugging-in and unplugging when crouched down, searching under a small desk in a confined space.

Setting up a small office space can be simple and straightforward if you follow the advice above. Given your space constraints, you can accomplish a lot if you know how and where to place the limited number of items and pieces of furniture you require. Smart and effective layout and lighting will make you feel like you are working with a lot more space than you actually have and will be conducive to a productive workday.
