On April 15, Toronto Mayor Tom Ford met with 13 members of his executive committee to discuss his proposal to build a new casino. According to the Toronto Star, Ford announced that he won't back down from his decision, despite the fact that there has been significant public outcry from residents who oppose his plan. One of the main reasons Ford continues to stand by the casino's development is because he said that it will help bring thousands of jobs to Toronto.
"We know which way we're going, our team does," he said. "Now, the other councillors – it's either no or yes. And if it's a yes, [tell them], 'Thank you very much, appreciate the support for creating 10,000 good-paying jobs.' And if it's a no, then I guess that becomes an election issue."
Although the Vegas-style casino could potentially generate $148 million in annual revenues, many residents are upset with the plan because they believe it will also bring in more violence and crime, according to the Pulse of Canada.
