Toronto theater gets new home, may generate revenue

Over the past decade, many theater professionals throughout Toronto have raised concern that there hasn't been a permanent place for shows to be hosted. However, all of that has changed. According to the Globe and Mail, the Crow's Theater will now be moved to a 200-seat theater in Toronto’s east-end Leslieville neighborhood.

Since there wasn't a specific place for shows prior to the recent announcement, it is more than likely there were props set up in self storage spaces throughout the community. In order to save significant amounts of money each month, a lot of arts-focused organizations have been struggling with the recession. By having a Toronto storage unit, money savings can increase.

According to Ward 36 Councillor Gary Crawford, chair of the mayor’s task force on arts and theaters, cutting arts programs throughout Toronto could be harmful to the city's economy. He told the Toronto Star the programs are "essential" to the community and generate about $9 billion a year. He added that about 130,000 people work in the sector.

Chris Abraham, the artistic director for Crow's Theater, told the source he thinks the new location will benefit the theater as well as the economy.

"It’s about going where the space is possible, where there’s an audience, where there’s opportunity," he said. "Also, it’s a city that celebrates new things – it’s harder to cherish, support and nurture our existing institutions."
