Joanne (not her real name) spent a lot of time analyzing her family‘s move from her house to her Toronto self-storage unit. She itemized each piece, calculated cubic feet for each item being moved in and estimated that at most, she would need 200 sq ft of floor space to manage all the items going into storage. Being a perfectionist, before finalizing with the mover, she went over the list of storage items with the senior manager of the moving company. He confirmed what Joanne already knew and that the maximum storage size would be about 10ft x 20ft storage unit. Joanne reserved her storage unit prior to her move. On the moving day, Joanne went to the self-storage office…

The moving process is something just about everyone experiences at least once in their life. But if people aren’t careful in who they hire to help them pack up their boxes and belongings, it could be an experience they never want to have again. A reliable mover should have excellent client reviews According to the U.S.-based Better Business Bureau, which helps consumers determine if businesses are legitimate and good to deal with, the firm receives loads of complaints from homeowners who have been scammed by movers. To help people determine what movers are for real, the BBB and American Moving and Storage Association has a few pointers. For instance, the organizations say homeowners should research the…

Storage unit companies are in the business of providing homeowners with the space they need for their belongings. But what would a company be if it didn’t also give renters tips on how to maximize their own living space? Fortunately, a U.S.-based media source recently published some ways people can find more room to house their belongings in the bedroom. You'll need less self storage if you organize your storage stuff For instance, the Seattle Times recommends using the space that’s beneath the bed, as a standard king-size mattress takes up 42 square-feet of living space. Thin portable storage containers would fit nicely. The paper says homeowners should also look to make the area that’s made…

Jiffy Self Storage is helping to raise money for flood victims in Pakistan. According to the United Nations, the floods that began in late July have created “one of the largest humanitarian crises that the UN and its humanitarian partners have ever responded to.” According to the UN more than 200,000 houses have been demolished and in excess of 4.3 million persons are affected. To put it into another perspective, a flood of this magnitude would affect about 12% of the Canadian population or would be close to the entire population of Toronto GTA. Jiffy Toronto matches private donations for Pakistan flood victims. We are disappointed that the response from Canadians was not forthcoming in the…

Since harmonized sales tax (HST) came into effect, increased costs for resale homes has put a damper on the market place. More people will try and buy resale homes in order to save the HST that is only payable on new homes.  Notwithstanding, increased pressure on resale homes, Canada is experiencing the largest decline in pricing since leading the pack in the first quarter of 2010 with largest increase in sales prices.  According to economist Adrianne Warren, “Demand and prices have softened alongside moderating global growth…The slowdown has been the most dramatic in Canada.” Average Canadian sale prices during the first quarter were up 16.6 per cent year over year, but in the second quarter, just 6.6 percent. What this…

Where were you when the Richter scale measured 5.5? If you felt some trembling or shaking around you, probably you did not realize that there was a real earthquake in our area but when you found out that what you felt was an earthquake, you talked up the situation with everyone around you. When something goes wrong, we like to tell everyone about the incident. When something good happens, we like to tell people about the event. We also have a great story to tell about our Jiffy Self Storage Toronto building. There was a rumble from within the bowels of our Toronto storage building but our reinforced concrete building survived quake trauma entirely intact. Our 6-inch reinforced concrete floors,…

Most people do not know or understand how HST is going to affect them. Even though there has been much publicity about HST, from the many people we speak to everyday at our Toronto self storage facility, the majority of these persons are misguided about their understanding or do not have any knowledge about the impending changes that are going to have major impacts on the daily lives of all Ontarians. Large businesses are ready for HST but many small companies have no idea how HST will affect them. Most businesses do not understand that they will be able to apply the full HST input credit for various costs and services so that HST will flow through for the full 13%…

For companies in the process of making warehousing and storage decisions, there is a broad spectrum of options that should be considered. For those in need of large-scale complex materials handling, the warehousing function is often better left to a third party specialist. On the other end of the spectrum are unserviced spaces, which offer little more than 3 walls and a loading door (if you’re lucky). Between the extremes lies a unique option which is proving to be highly effective for a growing number of companies. A new breed of self-storage facility has emerged, designed explicitly to meet the needs of businesses. With a range of basic services including internet connectivity, security, climate-controlled warehouses, meeting space, and parcel reception and handling,…

At this time of year, most people are settled in for the year and start thinking about gift giving as the year starts to wind down. Jiffy Self Storage recognizes that there is going to be a slow down in personal storage services; so with the annual seasonal slow down, we are always thinking of ways to give something back to our new renters to encourage off season storage rentals. From now until the end of the year, new renters get 3 month’s storage for the price of 2 month’s storage. So if you are running out of space, or need a small unit for storing Christmas and other seasonal gifts, get yourself a small personal storage unit such as…
