Packing
Tips
|
| Start
packing at least two weeks in advance
of moving day |
- Check
grocery/liquor stores for free boxes.
Uniform size boxes stack easier
for both moving and storage. Be
sure boxes are strong enough to
hold 25-30 lbs. Use smaller boxes
for heavier items and larger boxes
for light-weight bulky items. Fill
each box completely and compactly.
Do not overfill or underfill.
- For
boxes and other containers:
- List
contents.
- Assign
a number.
- Indicate
the room each box will be placed
in at final destination.
- Prepare
an inventory record of box numbers
and contents for referral at a later
date.
- Seal
all boxes with packing tape.
- Wrap
dishes and glasses in tissue or
packing paper and pack in sturdy
boxes. Newspaper is good padding
for most items. However, newspaper
ink smears, which may result in
additional cleaning when unpacking.
- Do
not pack fragile and heavy items
in the same box.
- Wrap
pictures and mirrors in cardboard
and mark them "Fragile".
- Furniture
with drawers can be utilized as
storage places for knick-knacks,
silverware, china, small items,
etc. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels
or blankets to prevent breakage.
- Keep
clothing in dresser drawers. You
won't need boxes for these items.
- Large
appliances make excellent "packing
cases" for blankets, towels, tablecloths,
etc.
- Shovels,
hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored
in empty garbage cans. Stack extra
cans together.
- Don't
move what you don't need. Get rid
of excess items by running an ad
or by holding a garage sale. Consider
Goodwill, Salvation Army or other
charitable organizations for those
discards.
