Security is key to good self storage experience

As the self storage industry continues to grow, more people in the U.S. and Canada may be hearing more and more about affordable portable self storage containers. However, because of the increased popularity from shows like A&E's Storage Wars, some think such facilities have become a bigger target for criminals and thieves, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Provo, Utah, police Sgt. Matthew Siufanua, recently gave his best advice to potential renters on picking the most secure storage facility in their areas.

"Using good crime-prevention steps can reduce your fear of crime and help prevent you from becoming an easy target," Siufanua told the publication. "How can you protect yourselves? One thing you can do is choose a business that focuses on security."

According to Siufanua, potential renters should first ask around to neighbors or friends to see if they keep any items at storage facilities. Friends are more likely to be honest about conditions, which may make finding a safe business that much easier.

Many times people will go to the internet to find affordable self storage in Toronto, for example, and although this is a good way to find facilities close by, consumers should always go and check out the property before agreeing to anything.

At each site, Siufanua suggests renters ask business managers questions like, "Does the business require photo identification from its customers?" "Are all empty units secured?" and "Do employees of the business routinely patrol the grounds?"

The Cape May County Herald reports that new renters should also look into insurance policies to make sure they are covered if there is ever an emergency at the facility.
